Thief smashes window to steal bikes in Costa Mesa
Surveillance video captured a thief smashing a window at The Cyclist and stealing two bikes.

COSTA MESA, Calif. (KABC) -- A thief was captured on video smashing through a window to steal two bikes worth thousands of dollars in Costa Mesa.

Authorities said the burglar struck at The Cyclist on Newport Boulevard at about 3 a.m. on Sunday.

Surveillance video showed an object flying through the window of the bike shop, shattering the glass.

Shortly after a man jumps into the store and runs toward a row of bicycles.

The suspect grabbed a bike and a pair of gloves and took off. He came back to the store and grabbed more gloves and another bike before leaving for good.

"Two very expensive stump jumpers taken, they are a specialized product, bicycle, mountain bike," The Cyclist Owner John Marconi said.

Marconi said the burglar took about $8,500 in merchandise.

"When he picked up the two bikes, he knew exactly what he wanted. He didn't even look at the tags, just pulled the two bikes out," Marconi explained.

Police searched for the man shortly after the burglary, but the suspect was already gone.

Officials said they hoped someone would recognize the suspect from the surveillance video.

The man was approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing about 200 pounds, and had short, buzzed hair that was possibly brown, according to authorities.

Marconi said he'd been burglarized three times in the last year, each time by a suspect smashing through a window.

"You know you work really, really hard and you watch an entire two or three days' worth of profit go out the door," Marconi described.

Marconi offered a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspect and the return of the bicycles.
