Sheriff's deputy dies after he, 2 CHP officers shot in Sacramento

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KABC) -- Authorities say a sheriff's deputy has died after he and two other law enforcement officers were shot during a vehicle theft investigation in Sacramento Wednesday.

The shooting happened Wednesday in Sacramento. Two California Highway Patrol officers and one Sacramento County sheriff's deputy were hospitalized, along with the suspect.

The deputy died in the hospital. He was identified as Deputy Robert French, a 21-year veteran of the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department.

Officials said the two CHP officers were in stable condition. They have not said whether they are seeking any other suspects in the shooting.

A chase preceded the shooting, which occurred at a Ramada motel amid a probation search connected to the stolen vehicle, according to authorities.

The suspect reportedly fired through the door at the CHP officers who were struck. French was positioned at the back of the hotel when he was shot by a suspect firing off a balcony, authorities said.

The suspect managed to get away, leading officers on a second chase before crashing and again exchanging gunfire with police.

There is a heavy police presence in the area, and police temporarily shut down nearby traffic.

The Sacramento Police Department and California Highway Patrol are at the scene.
