Legendary fashion designer Oscar de la Renta dead at 82
Oscar de la Renta, the legendary fashion designer who shaped the wardrobe of Hollywood stars, political figures and socialites for more than four decades, has died. He was 82.
Family members confirm to ABC News that the designer passed away in his Connecticut home Monday night. He was surrounded by his family and friends. The cause of death was not released, but de la Renta was diagnosed with cancer in 2006.
The designer made his name in the early 1960s when first lady Jacqueline Kennedy wore his impeccable evening wear and chic suits. He launched his own label in the mid-1960s, and went on to dress many other well-known women, including Sarah Jessica Parker, Penelope Cruz, Sandra Bullock and Anne Hathaway.
Most recently, he designed Amal Clooney's wedding dress, which was embroidered with beading and crystals.

On Monday night, Laura Bush released the following statement: "My daughters and I have many fond memories of visits with Oscar, who designed our favorite clothes, including Jenna's wedding dress. We will always remember him as the man who made women look and feel beautiful."
De la Renta was the youngest of seven children born in the Dominican Republic. Although he rose to the top of the fashion world working in Madrid, Paris and New York City, De la Renta often visited the Dominican Republic, where he kept a home.
The fashion designer is survived by his wife, Annette, and a son, Moises, as well as stepchildren and step-grandchildren.
