Local soldier honored with Purple Heart

LOS ALAMITOS (KABC) Sgt. Gilbert Juarez received the honor before his colleagues during a ceremony at the U.S. Army Reserve Center in Los Alamitos.

On Nov. 13, 2005, Sgt. Juarez's convoy was hit by an IED in Ramadi.

Juarez received injuries to his spine and was left unable to walk.

After more than two years of medical care and the help of his wife and family, he's proud to be awarded the honor he deserves.

Although he's on medical leave, Juarez said he fought to not be discharged and be allowed to remain in the Army.

Several other soldiers in Juarez's convoy were also injured.
