Fundraiser in L.A. for slain SWAT officer

SOUTH L.A. LAPD SWAT officer Randal Simmons was shot to death in a standoff last week in Winnetka. Tuesday night, family and friends paid tribute to him with a candlelight vigil in South L.A.

His funeral is scheduled for Friday.

Meantime, there's a fundraiser Wednesday at the Burger King on 700 West Cesar Chavez Ave. in Downtown L.A. One-hundred-percent of the proceeds go to the Simmons family.

"I think another example of the generosity of Angelinos, and of course we encourage other businesses to do the same -- come out and support the LAPD and officers to thank Randy Simmons and his family for giving the ultimate sacrifice," said Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, D-Los Angeles

The Burger King will be open until midnight.

Simmons was the first LAPD officer to be killed in the line of duty.

SWAT officer James Veenstra was also injured in the standoff. He was released from the hospital Monday.
