Newly-discovered toxic chemicals found in the soil near the Exxon-Mobil refinery in Torrance mean at least nine houses may have to be bought out by the oil giant, according to the Daily Breeze. An investigation has uncovered 16 acres of contaminated soil.
The highest concentrations of carcinogenic benzene vapors and methane gas were detected in a four and a half acre tract.
Refinery officials say the gases are apparently coming from degrading petroleum products.
More tests are under way.
Discussions about selling the affected homes are to begin next week.
