ABC donates $10K to Tiger Woods Center

March 28, 2008 12:00:00 AM PDT
Oprah's Big Give made another big donation Friday. As part of Oprah Winfrey's latest hit show "Big Give," ABC Television Network and ABC7 presented a $10,000 check to the Tiger Woods Learning Center in Anaheim on Friday.

"The whole idea came from Oprah. She decided that the best thing to do really is to give back, or actually pay it forward, and the idea came from her, developed into a series, and the fun thing now is it's really taking off," said Mike Benson, executive vice president, marketing, ABC Entertainment.

For the past two years, students go to the state-of-the-art after-school program to get ready for college, and it was all part of the vision of pro golfer Tiger Woods.

"Kids are serving out on the streets from here, and they're making a difference in their own lives, and they're making a difference in the community, just like him," said 10th-grader Navdeep Kaur.

Officials at the center said Woods got the idea from his father, the late Earl Woods, who always taught him to give back to the community. That's meant an opportunity for students to improve their lives and others'.

"I had like a bad attitude, and I was doing bad in school, and I just wasn't paying attention. And now, since I've came here, I've been having a better attitude, smiles on my face," said 9th-grader Eric Leos.

"It's really helpful because you get to do your homework and stuff, and it's really resourceful all the things they have, computers, books, and it's really great that we get to the community service because we get to give back to the community, planting trees," said 12th-grader Safa Nasser.

One pay-it-forward campaign to the next -- hopefully this "big give" will inspire others to give back.
