LAPD urged to stop offering bonuses

LOS ANGELES The bonuses, which range from $5,000 to $10,000, were initiated last year in an effort to attract more qualified candidates.

But the City Council's public safety committee says the department is already exceeding hiring goals, and with the slowing economy, thinks the bonuses are no longer needed.

According to the L.A. Daily News, a recent survey showed only 16 percent of recruits cited the bonuses as a reason for joining the force.
