Opening statements in Metrolink crash trial

GLENDALE Prosecutors are expected to focus on the motivation of the suspect, 29-year-old Juan Alvarez.

Eleven people were killed and 180 were injured in the January 2005 derailment in Glendale.

Prosecutors say they have two major questions: Was Alvarez trying to commit suicide when he drove his jeep onto a train track? Or, was he trying to cause a horrible catastrophe to get the attention of his estranged wife?

Alvarez could receive the death penalty if convicted.
