LOS ANGELES --
Twenty-five million Americans complain of those unsightly, raised, often painful, bulging varicose veins. Now one local doctor says he can get rid of them using a crochet hook.UCLA Dr. Peter Lawrence gets his crochet hooks at regular crafts stores. Prior to the procedure, he shaves and modifies his hooks. Trans-illumimation light shows him exactly where the veins are.
"It allows me to see virtually all of the vein. I can make a tiny little incision next to the vein, catch it with a crochet hook and then remove it," said Dr. Lawrence.
A study of more than 260 patients shows the technique resulted in quick vein removal, little bruising, and excellent cosmetic outcomes.
Dr Lawrence says laser or vein stripping treatments can leave bruises that last for days.
