LAPD puts hiring civilians on hold

May 6, 2008 6:38:10 AM PDT
The Los Angeles Police Department's plan to hire more civilians has been put on hold because of the city's multi-million dollar budget deficit, according to a report. The report will be presented to the police commission Tuesday.

Officials say a decision on the plan will have to wait until after the city's 2008-2009 budget is established.

The proposed plan follows an audit released by the city controller.

It found the city could put more police officers on patrol, and save millions of dollars, by increasing the number of civilian employees in the LAPD.
