Caltech researchers watched the brains of their subjects with MRI imaging. They arranged a hypothetical situation where participants had to distribute food to orphans. Every time subjects gave food, the emotion centers of their brain lit up more so than the areas of logic or reason.
The conclusion -- reason often has to struggle with emotion to find a just solution.
