Thousands ruled ineligible for tax rebate

Hundreds of thousands of taxpayers won't receive a share of the stimulus package because of a provision aimed at preventing illegal immigrants from getting the rebates.

Only taxpayers who have Social Security numbers qualify for the checks.

Due to that rule, many who would have qualified for the bonus are being left out.

That's because they filed jointly and are married to foreigners whose immigration status doesn't allow them to have a Social Security number.
