L.A. Assemblywoman makes history

May 13, 2008 6:57:01 AM PDT
A Los Angeles Assemblywoman made history Tuesday when she was sworn in as the new speaker of the State Assembly. Former community activist Karen Bass is the first black woman to hold the top post.

Her first priority is the budget. Bass says it can't be balanced by spending cuts alone, but didn't offer any specific tax increases.

Bass supports public financing of political campaigns, but says she has no plans to launch any campaign finance reform initiatives.
