Heavy winds sweep across Southland

May 22, 2008 6:07:48 AM PDT
The strong winds we've seen across the region lately are finally starting to settle down, but not before locals got one last blast overnight.Over the past 24 hours, gusts of more than 70 miles per hour knocked down power poles and trees, made for bad visibility on some roads and whipped up fires.

A power line came down on a police cruiser Wednesday night, trapping the officer inside for about 10 minutes. He was not injured.

The winds also kicked up a 15-acre brushfire in the Angeles National Forest on Wednesday that briefly threatened some homes.

Drivers are warned to be aware of trees and other debris on the road.

The wind advisory was in effect until 9 a.m. Thursday.
