According to L.A. City Fire Dept., 21 people were injured in the crash, eight of them critically, 11 with less-severe injuries. Five people were confirmed killed.
Los Angeles Police spokeswoman Karen Smith said four people, including a 12-year-old male, were killed in the collision. The 12-year-old boy was ejected from one vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other victims were burned to death inside one vehicle. Two more in the crash died later at the hospital.
A triage area was set up immediately on scene once emergency personnel arrived. At least 10 patients were observed in that minor-injury area.
At least three vehicles were destroyed in the collision. Shortly after the incident, images from the scene showed the vehicles still smoking from recently doused fire.
