The 16-year-old junior at Dominguez High School has overcome many hardships. Growing up in Compton, raised by her single mother, Laura has still strived to give back to those around her.

"My inspiration comes from my mother. Me wanting to succeed in life, be able to provide for my community, set an example for my sisters," said Laura.

Carrying a 4.5 GPA, Laura still takes time to help others. She is appreciated by students and teachers.

"She's all around the whole package. Very studious, very respectful," said teacher Monica Gonzalez. "The peers respect her. She's a role model for them."

Laura is about to explore far beyond Compton. She wants others to be aware of how far they can reach.

"To know that there are opportunities out there. Just because we come from an urban community such as this, doesn't mean we have to stay confined to it," said Laura. "There's bigger things in the world, and we have to search for them and be able to work hard for them if we really want them."

An inspiration to her family and her community, she is our Cool Kid, Laura Jasmin Villafana.
