Young, elderly at risk for Salmonella

LOS ANGELES The growing concern over a nationwide Salmonella outbreak comes after the first death possibly linked to raw tomatoes.

Officials believe Salmonella may have been a contributing factor in the death of a 67-year-old Houston man.

Red round, Roma and plum tomatoes have been linked to the Salmonella outbreak. There have been 145 people infected since April.

Because of the concern, numerous restaurants and supermarkets have taken tomatoes off their shelves, and several local school districts have indefinitely suspended serving uncooked tomatoes to children.

Scientists at an FDA administration lab in Irvine are still trying to determine the source of the outbreak.
