The contestants are judged on their technical ability, their stage presence and the their airness.
A real guitar, a broom or any other prop on stage gets contestants disqualified.
Extra points are given to those who smash a guitar before the show.
"It's going to make me famous. I paid for three years of guitar lessons, they don't need a guitar, what can I say," said one contestant.
Three of the air guitarists at the competition go on to the nationals in August in San Francisco, and the world guitar championship is held in Finland.
