LOS ANGELES --
Employers are getting sick and tired of workers who call in sick all the time so some companies might pay employees to lead healthier lifestyles.Studies show employees who are obese or smoke miss more work days each year than their normal weight, non-smoking counterparts.
A new survey of 225 American companies finds 71 percent offer gift cards, cash bonuses, or a reduction in health premium costs to employees who complete health and wellness programs.
And the effort is paying off - 80 percent of the companies say they earn back the money through reduced health costs and increased worker productivity.
