Caught on tape: Man lurking in preschool

WEST COVINA Police say they know who broke into this preschool and day car center. And the reason they want him off the street is not because he stole anything. But because of what he did when he was inside.

The break-in happened after dark. A man broke a window and made his way into a Montessori preschool. Surveillance video shows the man calmly entering an office. He appears to be eating something. Then he stares straight into the camera.

"The odd behavior suggested to us this man is something to be concerned with," said Corporal Rudy Lopez, West Covina Police Dept.

Police in West Covina have identified the man on this videotape as Scott Raymond Lopez. They say he has a criminal record and they want him off the streets.

In some of the surveillance video, detectives say the burglar is seen urinating on the floor. Then he leaves the school without taking anything.

"His conduct in there was disturbing, to the point where it's not something you would normally see in someone who's committed a burglary. Their intent is usually get in, get their stuff, and get out. That was not the case in this one," said Cpl. Lopez.

Brad Jenkins lives down the street from the pre-school.

"This place is a very busy preschool, morning, afternoon, all the way into the evening, parents are bringing, picking their kids up from school," said Jenkins. "Hearing that he knew he was being videotaped, had no shame in that, went ahead and did these obscene things in the hallway in the preschool where these children are hanging out, that's just wrong."

Police say that an anonymous tip helped them identify Lopez. But he remained at large Wednesday night.

"He has connections to the city of West Covina, La Puente, Valinda, and a residence in Monrovia as well," said Cpl. Lopez.
