The girl was transported in critical condition to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The girl had been playing with friends in the courtyard of her apartment building when two male gunmen walked up the nearby alley and fired shots toward a crowd. At least one of the shots struck the 8-year-old girl in the chest.
The suspects were described as two African-American males, possibly in their late teens or early 20s, wearing white T-shirts and dark pants. The two were last seen running northbound in the alley.
