Nine climbers feared dead on K-2

August 3, 2008 12:00:00 AM PDT
Nine mountain climbers are presumed dead on K-2, the world's second largest mountain. An avalanche apparently cut the climbers ropes, used to cross a treacherous wall of ice.

Several other mountaineers are still missing, prompting a desperate search on the peak in northern Pakistan.

A climber based out of Los Angeles is one of the climbers on K-2 this weekend.

22-year-old Nicholas rice is from Hermosa Beach. On his website seen here, rice told readers he has safely reached the base camp.

He said he made it above 25-thousand feet on K-2, when he decided to turn back because of deteriorating conditions.

Rice's expedition leader is among the missing.

He says he's still holding out for his safe return.
