NEEDLES, Calif. --
An investigation is under way into an unusual crash on a California highway Tuesday morning. A small, homebuilt airplane taking off from an interstate after making an emergency landing was struck by a car. The pilot was killed.Authorities say the experimental aircraft had landed on an Interstate 40 ramp, about 10 miles west of Needles.

Witnesses tell the Federal Aviation Administration the plane was about 3 feet off the ground when the car slammed into it.
A San Bernardino County Sheriff's spokeswoman says three people in the car suffered minor injuries when its windshield shattered.
