O.C. says goodbye seven-digit dialing

ANAHEIM, Calif. Life in the (714) is already crowded, however, that also means the prefix is in short supply.

State regulators decided to add a new area code to the Orange County region: (657).

Adding a new area code is called an "overlay," which is also happening on the Westside. The area covered by the code (310), will now add (424) to its list.

Public utility officials say an overlay is less disruptive than slicing up an area. They sliced up South Orange County when (949) came into the picture.

However, an overlay of area codes makes dialing a little more difficult. Beginning on Saturday, anyone calling in and around Orange County will have to say goodbye to seven-digit dialing, and enter an area code first.

Customers from Fullerton to Huntington Beach, and from Costa Mesa back up to Yorba Linda will have to deal with the dual code.
