Top 7 spots for cool desserts in SoCal

August 26, 2008 12:00:00 AM PDT
From icy treats to tasty baked goods, there's no shortage of delicious desserts in Southern California.Menchie's Frozen Yogurt in Valley Village is a D.I.Y. destination for frozen yogurt.

"It's all based on weight," said Citysearch Editor Tara de Lis. "So it's 39 cents per ounce, one dollar extra for the waffle, and you can add as little or as much fruit toppings as you'd like."

"We have the fresh fruit and granola, and all that good stuff," said Danna Caldwell, Menchie's co-founder. "We also have the chocolate, and the fudge, and all the fun stuff. But the yogurt is almost all non-fat, unless we have a fun flavor, like cookies-and-cream. We also have low-carb, dairy-free, and sugar-free options."

L.A.'s got MILK for malts.

"For instance, the strawberry shortcake malt," said Citysearch's de Lis. "There's also the Milky Way malt; Latin-inspired tres leches cakes."

"Everything is homemade," said Bret Thompson, MILK. "We have a very unique line of novelty ice creams, Drumsticks, ice cream sandwiches, milkies, bon-bons, and all these kinds of things that take you back to your childhood."

Luna Park not only serves up gourmet comfort food, but also some great desserts.

"We have a wide variety of desserts, and once again, a little something for everybody," said Luna Park's Peer Larson. "What we've been doing for the summertime is featuring the snow cones."

The snow cones are $7.50 and come in many different flavors, including blueberry, raspberry, and tangerine.

Lamill, known for its coffee, has a cool way to satisfy a sweet tooth.

"In summer, they have really amazing frozen lollipops with a tea-infused center, a liquid center actually, and there's a strawberry dream cake," said de Lis.

Rounding out the Citysearch Top 7 places for a cool treat are: Ice Pan, Amaranta Cocina Mexicana, and Mashti Malone's Ice Cream.

In Orange County, try Hans' Homemade Ice Cream.

In the Inland Empire, check out Melt Gelato.
