Police shoot man during standoff in Irvine

IRVINE The shooting happened on Topeka and Walnut Avenue late Tuesday night.

Police were responding to a woman who reported she had been beaten by her husband. When they arrived at the apartment, they say the husband had barricaded himself in a bedroom.

After evacuating the woman and her children and calling in a SWAT team, negotiators tried to convince the man to surrender. Police say he emerged holding an assault rifle. SWAT officers shot when he allegedly pointed it at them.

The man is in critical condition.
