The teen was originally transported to the hospital in critical condition just after 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
The victim did not go to Santa Ana High School, but he is a Santa Ana resident.
The victim was shot multiple times in the chest and authorities say this is a gang-related shooting.
"He was walking with a large group of people when the suspects approached, asked what their gang affiliation was, and - according to witnesses - no answer was given. And, that's when the suspects fired multiple times," said Corporal Jose Gonzales, Santa Ana Police Department. "According to witnesses all suspects fled on foot in an unknown direction. Detectives are, right now, working the case. They are asking for the public's help. Because this is gang-related, it is eligible for the Gang Homicide Reward Program where people can be eligible for up to $50,000 for information given."
It is not clear if the victim belonged to a gang.
Police are looking for at least one suspect, but there was a number of other people with that suspect at the time.
If you have information about the incident, you are asked to call the Santa Ana Police Department at (714) 245-8648.
Police say there were a lot of witnesses in the area, so they hope someone will come forward and do the right thing.
