Babies as young as 6 weeks learn to swim

September 28, 2008 12:00:00 AM PDT
Some toddlers who are barely walking will soon be showing off their swimming skills in Japan. The "Swimbabes" based near Portland, Oregon will travel to Japan in November for a baby and children's swim conference.

The Swimbabes program teaches water survival skills to children as young as six-weeks-old. Others learn how to help a younger brother or sister who may be in trouble in the water.

"And I'm comfortable if she was to fall in water, that she would be able to turn over and hang in there long enough for me to be able to get in and be able to get her safe," said parent Sara Strong.

Program organizers say they've had parents who've lost children to drowning and bring siblings in to be trained, saying they cannot risk lose another child.
