South Bay cyclist killed by big rig

CARSON, Calif. The corner of Susana Road and Del Amo Boulevard is a very busy intersection in Carson. It's an intersection where 18-wheelers come off the 710 Freeway. On Tuesday, it was also the scene of a terrible collision.

Traffic was flowing freely on Tuesday night, but debris that scattered the sidewalks indicated an earlier tragedy.

"It's horrible. Really, really young man," said Jorge Del Giorgio, an eyewitness.

Jorge is talking about what happened at 5 p.m. on Tuesday. An 18-wheeler was making a right turn on to Del Amo when authorities say two cyclists entered the intersection. They were both hit by the big rig.

"They were on their bikes, riding their bikes from the sidewalk onto the crosswalk area crossing the street ... and they were hit by the truck," said Sgt. Tom Filkins, California Highway Patrol.

A young woman only had minor injuries. But, authorities say a 20-year-old man was run over and then trapped beneath the cab's rear axle.

"I can't tell you who is at fault right now. We're investigating it and we should know relatively soon," said Sgt. Filkins.

Jorge says the 20-year-old man was initially knocked to the ground and tried to get up, but the big rig kept going.

"I moved my hand and tried to stop the truck, but the truck continued ahead and crushed over ... the left tire over the guy," said Jorge.

Willie Schrock rides down this street every day.

"You more or less have to be careful and be watchful," said Schrock.

The name of the 20-year-old victim has not been released.
