Search for boat that may have collided

October 2, 2008 12:00:00 AM PDT
The Coast Guard is searching the Pacific in response to a call of a debris field that could be the result of a collision between a boat and a barge. The search area is about five miles out off the coast of San Pedro and south of the Los Angeles Harbor.

A 26-foot boat left Long Beach two nights ago, bound for Catalina, and it never arrived.

The debris included a small boat, life jackets, children's toys and other personal items, as well as fiberglass particles from the barge.

"It's an ongoing investigation. When you are out on the water, there are all kinds of hazards. We're looking into that with our coast guard investigators," said Ensign Stephanie Young from the U.S. Coast Guard.

The name of the boat that might have sunk and who owns the boat have not been released.
