ADHD drugs may cut risk of drug abuse

More proof now that medications used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can help cut a person's risk of substance abuse.In the past, there were concerns that drugs used to treat ADHD, like Ritalin, increased the risk of drug or alcohol abuse, but a new study out of Massachusetts shows ADHD drugs actually delay the onset of substance abuse in adolescents.

The findings were especially high among girls.

Researchers say girls taking ADHD drugs were 50 percent less likely to abuse drugs and alcohol than girls not taking the drugs
