Why do women get more cavities?

October 20, 2008 12:00:00 AM PDT
Researchers think they may be able to explain why women tend to get more cavities than men.A study, conducted by scientists at the University of Oregon, claims hormonal and dietary changes related to pregnancy may be the reason.

They point to studies that show women often produce less saliva during pregnancy, contributing to tooth decay.

They say other changes may also play a role, including the craving many pregnant women have for sweet foods.

The full study appears in this month's issue of Current Anthropology.
