Mother drowned 5-year-old son in tub?

POMONA, Calif. Details in the case are sparse. Monday afternoon, a young mother and her son reportedly checked in to a hotel on Gary Avenue in Pomona mid-afternoon. Shortly after 9:30 p.m. Pomona police received a call from inside the hotel. The caller said that a woman was attempting to commit suicide in one of the guest rooms.

When police arrived, 23-year-old Josie Navarro was struggling with an individual apparently trying to stop her from committing suicide.

"When the officers arrived, they found a woman being restrained on the floor by another person, and further check of the room revealed that a 5-year-old child was underwater in the bathtub," said Pomona Police Sergeant Michael Olivieri.

Officers immediately performed CPR until paramedics arrived, transported the child to Edgar Manuel Sanchez Jr. to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

"She murdered her son and then took some over-the-counter sleeping pills, and then that's when the friend or associate intervened. She is now been arrested, obviously. She was taken to Pomona Valley Hospital for clearance and has been booked at our Pomona City Jail for murder. And our condolences go out to that family. This is a horrible incident. It's sickening, you know, a human can do this to their child," said Sgt. Olivieri.
