LOS ANGELES --The L.A. County Sheriff's Department says it has more than 5,600 rape kits in storage and admits it doesn't know how many are unprocessed. This admission comes in the wake of recent controversy over the LAPD's glut of 7,000 rape kits waiting to be processed.
The Sheriff's Department says it aims to first examine the kits that have been in storage longest. Kits that have not been examined within 10 years cannot be used to prosecute suspects due to the statute of limitations.
