According to police reports early Thursday morning officers responded to a domestic violence call from a residence in the 27000 block of Rio Vista Drive, in Menifee.
The call was reportedly made by the deputy's wife.
"We are looking at a sexual assault and an attempted homicide. The victim right now is doing fairly well compared to what she had to go through. Right now she is in a safe place, and that is something that is being kept confidential. She is his wife," said Javier Rodriguez, Riverside County Sheriff's Department.
Sheriff's officials are hopeful that Moreno is still in the area, and could be convinced to turn himself in.
"We are trying to follow all leads. We are working with family members to see if they might be able to speak to him, and contact our department so we can resolve this situation," said Rodriguez.
Correctional deputies maintain security in the jails and are sworn to uphold the law and the ethics of the department they serve.
"Correctional deputies within our department go through an academy. I believe it is an 8 week academy with our department. They actually do take an oath for the sheriff's department," said Rodriguez.
Anyone with information about Moreno's whereabouts is asked to call the Riverside County dispatch at (951) 776-1099.
