SANTA ANA, Calif. --A judge has ruled that former Orange County Sheriff Michael Carona and his ex-mistress will be tried separately.Carona and Debra Hoffman are accused of conspiring to misuse the sheriff's office for personal profit. Hoffman's attorneys made the request for the separate trials, saying they both made incriminating statements against each other.
Carona's trial continues on Wednesday, when a former investigator for the Orange County District Attorney's Office is cross-examined.
Hoffman will be tried at a later date.
