CHP officer struck, killed on 60 Freeway

HACIENDA HEIGHTS, Calif. Officer Joseph Sanders, 29, was hit by a car and killed as he directed traffic at the scene of a previous accident on the eastbound 60 Freeway.

The fatal crash, reported at 4:20 a.m., happened west of Azusa Avenue in Hacienda Heights.

The CHP says two vehicles collided and one of them then hit the officer, who was airlifted to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"Just like the rest of us out here, he had a family," said CHP Sgt. Mike Garrett. "The family's been notified at this time and our personnel, our managers are with the family. This is a very, very dark day for the CHP. This officer was out there trying to lend assistance to the citizens of California and unfortunately lost his life."

The eastbound 60 Freeway was shut down for hours at the 605 Freeway connector to Azusa for the investigation.

Sanders had been with CHP for 14 months. He left behind a wife and children.
