Last-minute shoppers pack malls

December 20, 2008 12:00:00 AM PST
Southland malls were packed Saturday as shoppers tried to get in some last minute shopping before Christmas.Typically the final Saturday before the holiday is the second biggest shopping day of the year behind Black Friday. This year stores rolled out more deals and gimmicks to attract shoppers amid the economic recession. Some stores are offering free shipping and gift wrapping. In Canoga Park many stores in the Westfield Mall opened early, and shoppers were waiting outside even before retail doors opened. "I'm always hoping for bigger discounts," said Anna DeGenna, who was waiting outside of Macy's. " I don't know what it is going to be like, I haven't been out to the stores at all." DeGenna wasn't the only last-minute shopper. A survey from the National Retail Federation found that more than 50 percent of people haven't finished their holiday shopping. Retailers say they expect shoppers to be out late today, some stores in the Westfield Mall will even be open until midnight.
