Americans consuming more sugary drinks

January 12, 2009 12:00:00 AM PST
Sugary drinks are helping many people pack on the pounds.According to a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Americans now drink 300 calories a day in sugary drinks. That's 50 more calories a day than 20 years ago.

The extra calories could lead people to gain an extra five pounds a year.

Researchers say the increase is likely due to sweetened drinks becoming more readily available and an increase in container size.
