January 14, 2009 12:00:00 AM PST
The Los Angeles City Council's planning committee has unanimously voted to designate Griffith Park as a historic-cultural monument. The proposal now goes to the full council for consideration later this month.

Griffith Park is the largest urban park in the country. The Hollywood Sign, Griffith Observatory, and the L.A. Zoo are just some of the sites that make up the 4,200-acre park.

The land was donated to the city in 1896 by Col. Griffith J. Griffith.
