Oakland to fire 11 police officers

OAKLAND, Calif. Two sergeants and nine officers face termination in a case that has put dozens of prosecutions in jeopardy. Attorneys say at least 12 cases have been dismissed because of the scandal.

City attorney John Russo says an internal investigation alleges that the officers falsely told judges that substances seized from drug suspects had been identified by the crime lab as illegal drugs. Those lies were used to persuade judges to issue warrants that police relied on to gather more evidence.

Russo says some of the officers also lied to internal affairs investigators.

Police spokesman Jeff Thomason had no comment.
