A 41-year-old man was shot to death just west of downtown Los Angeles Saturday, police said. Rampart patrol officers responding to a radio call of assault with a deadly weapon in the 1300 block of South Bonnie Brae Street at about 3:50 a.m., and found Melvin Antonio Almendares lying on the sidewalk, shot in the chest, according to Officer Julianne Sohn, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Police Department.

Almendares was declared dead at the scene by fire paramedics, Sohn said.

The motive for the shooting was not known.

A white vehicle, possibly a Toyota Camry, was reported driving south from the scene of the shooting at about the time shots were fired, said Sohn.

Police asked anyone with information about the shooting to help by calling Rampart homicide detectives John Motto or Michael Arteaga at (213) 484- 3650 or by texting CRIMES (274637) and beginning the message with the letters LAPD.
