Pregnancy not factor in cancer survival

February 9, 2009 6:28:59 AM PST
A new study finds that pregnant women with breast cancer are not at more risk of death, recurrence or of spreading than other young breast cancer patients. Researchers said their findings contradict earlier studies that suggest pregnancy worsens the disease.

They studied data from 652 women ages 35 and younger who were treated for breast cancer. They found that being pregnant is not a significant factor in rates of cancer recurrence, spread and survival.

The study is in the journal Cancer.
