Disappointing report on multi-vitamins

In the largest study of its kind, researchers found that the vitamins did nothing to prevent cancers and heart disease in older women.

The study of more than 161,000 women follows other studies with similar results for men.

While researchers said vitamin-rich foods are the ideal sources of nutrients, don't give up on multi-vitamins just yet.

Researchers suggest vitamins may be "a form of insurance" for people with poor eating habits.

The study appears in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
