Pasadena traffic stop turns deadly

PASADENA, Calif. One person was shot and killed on Mentone Ave. at Washington Blvd. before 4 p.m. Thursday.

Pasadena police report that a driver was pulled over by two officers on Mentone Ave. for a traffic infraction at about 4:20 p.m. Thursday. The driver allegedly got out of his car and fired at least one shot at the officers. One or both officers returned fire and killed the driver. At least eight shots were fired in total.

The deceased driver has been identified by family members as Leroy Barnes, who was in his 30s. Barnes reportedly lived in the neighborhood.

A woman who was in the car with the driver was detained for questioning.

Washington Blvd. was closed in both directions as officers and coroner's personnel investigated.
