Teen hospitalized with BB gun head wound

LAGUNA HILLS, Calif. Family members thought he was doing some target practice. After vanishing for a time, they found him severely wounded.

Authorities say that that teen is in grave condition, on life support at /*Mission Hospital*/ in Mission Viejo. He is surrounded by his family. So many people want to know: How could a BB gun do this much damage?

The shooting happened behind a home in Laguna Hills in the back yard.

"It's, like, heart-breaking to know that a family as close as this can face a tragedy like this," said Alan Kunski.

Investigators say the boy is in grave condition after suffering a wound to his right temple from a Daisy BB gun.

Authorities say the boy would use the gun for target practice.

"Mother and his grandmother stated that they saw him in the backyard with his BB gun at approximately 5 o'clock last night," said /*Jim Amormino*/, Orange County Sheriff's Dept.

Official say they could not find the teen later that night, and searched the neighborhood. At around 11:30 p.m., the boy's grandmother found his BB gun along with a box of pellets on a hillside in the back yard.

"She later stated that she heard some noises in the bushes," said Amormino. "She went outside. Unfortunately she found her grandson bleeding from the head."

Neighbors and law enforcement arre trying to figure out how a BB gun could do this.

"We're not ruling out anything," said Amormino. "Whether it was an accident or a shooting. Whether someone else with that gun. Maybe a friend came over, they were shooting. Maybe it was an accident that way. It would be difficult to shoot yourself in the head. We're not sure if it's a possible ricochet. We're not sure exactly what happened."

People in this quiet upscale neighborhood were shocked by the incident.

"He and his sister were just like so close and you just knew, you'd see the family on Sunday morning taking off for church," said a neighbor. "It's the saddest thing to even picture anybody having to endure."

And at least one family member says the teenager is a good student, very artistic and quite a tennis player.

The teen remains in grave condition on life support in Mission Viejo, surrounded by his family.
