NTSB focuses on train crew cell phone use

WASHINGTON Federal officials want to know if the problem is an isolated incident, or part of a widespread issue.

Officials said a Metrolink engineer ran a red light and collided with a freight train, killing 25 people. The engineer was sending and receiving text messages prior to the crash.

During an NTSB hearing on Wednesday, members noted current rules designed to prevent such safety violations are clearly inadequate.

One proposal being considered is the installation of cameras in train locomotive cabs.
