Group threatens to kill American hostage

A militant group holding John Solecki said on Thursday said it would kill the /*United Nations*/ employee in four days unless Pakistan releases more than 1,000 people it claims are being held in secret prisons. The threat was made in a letter sent to a local Pakistani news agency.

Gunmen abducted Solecki on Feb. 2, after killing his driver as they drove to work in the Southwestern Pakistani city of Quetta. Solecki was in the region to help Afghan refugees.

A U.N. spokesman said officials were aware of the new threat and considers it "serious."

The Pakistan government denies that it operates secret prisons or holds prisoners in secret.
