Obama to reverse Bush's stem-cell limits

WASHINGTON This is something Mr. Obama pledged to do while running for president.

In 2003, then-President Bush signed an executive order banning government funding for all but a few existing stem cell lines.

President Obama's reversal of that policy will allow more laboratories to begin working with /*embryonic stem cells*/. Scientists hope the cells can someday be used to produce new treatments, even cures, for a variety of ailments and diseases.

Such research has been opposed by, among others, religious groups that objection to the destruction of human embryos that is required to obtain the cells.
